Abstract
Nausea and Vomiting are remain a problem in the postoperative period. It has been reported that propofol has antiemetic action. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect of propofol on the incidence of emesis during the first 24 hours after the minor orthopedic surgery. Fifty nine healthy female patients were randomly divided into the two groups as follows: Gropup p (n=31): induction with propofol and fentany, maintenance with an infusion of propfol, increments of fentany1 and N2O, Group E (n=28): induction with thiopental and fentany1, maintenance with enflurane and N2O. The incidence of emesis in group P(16.1%) was less than in group E(39.3%) significantly during the first 6 hours after the operation(P<0.05). However the overall incidence of emesis up to 24 hours postoperatively was not different between the groups: P group(32.3%) and E group(42.8%). In conclusion, the use of propofol anesthesia decreased only early amesis during the first 6 hours after the operation, but not up to 24 hours.
